A rickety-looking old bridge built on the gold-mining roads through the mountain passes outside Schwagway. Thousands of people fought their way through this grim territory in search of gold, and despite the romantic mythology that’s accrued around it, the whole “Alaska gold rush” thing was an enormous, faintly embarrassing debacle. Lots of folks died, while very few found enough gold to sustain them. To our relief, we never had to go across this particular bridge.grip388
